Family, Fundraising, and Finding Strength: The Inspiration Behind 'Overcoming Adversity'
24 October 2024

What inspired you to write ‘Overcoming Adversity: A Daughter's Journey with MS’, and how did the process help you cope with Emma’s diagnosis?
Steve: "I have been wanting to write a book for a few years, however, it was always put to the back of my mind for various reasons. It was during a conversation with Emma about Vietnam (her and Duane's next adventure) that it became obvious to me that her life was my storyline, and writing the book would be my way of finally coming to terms with her diagnosis. Research, interviewing and the writing process were all extremely therapeutic and helped me enormously."
Challenges faced when first learning of Emma's MS diagnosis and coming together to support her
Sharon and Steve, Emma's parents: "The main challenges were acceptance and guilt I believe. It took many within the family a long time to finally accept Emma's diagnosis. Guilt (as parents) at not being able to prevent what had happened to her, while also living approximately 120 miles away. Just being there for her if she needs to talk, while also giving advice when we think it is needed. Emotional support with regards to decisions she makes."
Duane, Emma's husband: "From my perspective it was the challenges that lay within my own mind. I was anxious about the future, the unpredictability of the disease, how fast would Emma deteriorate and to what extent. I had a million questions, I was unprepared, naïve…And worried, not only for Emma's future but also how would we cope financially if either, or both of us had to give up work? Together we set goals, small steps, something to work towards, things to focus on. We surrounded ourselves with positive people, that inner circle of friends and family who we could lean on. And lastly, I try to fill every day with the laughter, compassion, patience and the reassurance that Emma needs and deserves."
Every penny raised, helps with the life changing services [the MS Trust] offer
What motivated you and Emma to take on fundraising challenges for the MS Trust, and what was your fundraising experience like?
Steve: "My wife Sharon and I decided that raising funds for the MS Trust was a great way to give a little something back, a thank you for all the support that not only Emma has received, but the rest of the family also from the Trust. We really enjoyed doing the walk around Derwentwater, and while it was our Everest it was extremely rewarding."
Emma: "The varied work the MS Trust does to help support people with MS. The way I see it, every penny raised, helps with the life changing services they offer, whether that be via their online information, the training for MS professionals, and of course their research. I also see it as a personal challenge, and having something to focus on. I have thoroughly enjoyed the experiences so far, and although tough at times, it's worth the hard work when you know you've helped raise more awareness and raised vital funds for a worthy cause. I'm very excited about next year's challenge that I'll be undertaking with my husband Duane."
Although life has thrown you a curveball, and will change in some ways, it isn't over, and you're probably stronger than you ever thought you were
What do you hope readers, especially those newly diagnosed or supporting loved ones with MS, will take away from the book?
Sharon and Steve: "To make the reader understand that all is not lost, you can live your life with MS. When life throws you lemons, you make lemonade with them. How Emma has become such an inspiration to everyone who knows her."
Emma: "That although life has thrown you a curveball, and will change in some ways, it isn't over, and you're probably stronger than you ever thought you were. Seek out information for a better understanding of the condition, BUT from the right sources such as charitable organisations like MS Trust. Encourage loved ones to do the same because with a better understanding, comes better support. Also, and very importantly in my opinion, set yourself challenges (big or small). You gain a huge sense of accomplishment from achieving the goals you set yourself."
What advice would you give to others looking to support a cause close to their hearts?
Sharon and Steve: "If you firmly believe in something, and that something is close to your heart, you will find a way."
Emma: "You may have two or three causes close to your heart as time goes on, living with something like MS. I'd say choose one that really resonates with you, and you feel offers the right help to people living with the condition, and those supporting them. That way, if you find yourself struggling with your challenge, you can think back to why you took this on in the first place, which in turn will motivate you more. Share as much information as you can about the cause you are raising funds for, and your reasons why. This gives your loved ones a better understanding of your condition, and what the charity does, perhaps encouraging them to do more research of their own."
