NHS England recommends fampridine

MS Trust is delighted by NHS England’s recommendation of fampridine for use in people living with MS.

Fampridine is a treatment that can help improve walking in some people with MS, a symptom that can have a significant impact on independence, confidence and quality of life. Up to a third of people who take fampridine experience improvements in their mobility and walking speed, helping them to stay active and maintain their day-to-day independence.

Within the UK fampridine was first recommended for use to treat mobility issues in MS in Wales in 2019, this was followed by Scotland in 2020 and Northern Ireland in 2023. It’s only now that the same recommendation has been given for its use in England, bringing it in line with the rest of the UK and marking a huge step forward in equitable treatment access for people living with MS regardless of where they live.

We welcome NHS England’s decision to recommend fampridine for people living with MS in England. Mobility difficulties can have a profound effect on independence, wellbeing and everyday life.
