As 2022 draws to a close it’s time to reflect on another impactful year for the MS Trust’s Health Professional Programmes.
The MS Trust runs two separate programmes which work collaboratively with the NHS to place specialist MS health professionals in areas of the county with the greatest need.
Specialist Nurse Programme
Earlier in the year, the MS Trust published the bi-annual MS nurse mapping report, which highlighted that 50% more MS nurses are needed in the UK to meet the recommended caseload levels. This programme works alongside the NHS to identify areas in need, we then provide 80% of the funding for the first 15 months in post, and offer accredited training, mentorship and support for the whole MS team. Thus, improving and developing the service as a whole.
Advanced MS Champion Programme (AMSC)
An AMSC is an experienced healthcare professional who provides and coordinates care for people living with advanced MS, of which there are an estimated 40,000 in the UK. Again, the MS Trust provides 80% of the initial funding for the first 15 months in post and provides support, education and mentorship for the health professional. The Programme has recently completed its first pilot stage and reported game-changing results. Not only were the Champions making a life-changing difference to the people living with MS, but they saved the NHS an average of £465,378 per year per Champion. Read the full report here.
Programme growth
As the NHS continues to operate under significant pressure, the MS Trust programmes offer a sustainable means of improving services for people living with MS. Interest in these programmes has considerably ramped up over recent months and we are now pleased to be recruiting for three separate new posts, along with several other positions still in the pipeline.
