Miles for MS improves fitness and boosts mood, according to survey

26 February 2020

We’re excited to announce that Miles for MS is back for 2020! Now in its third year, Miles for MS is the MS Trust’s ever-popular accessible distance challenge which takes place throughout May.

You set your own distance challenge to complete over the course of the month, track your distance and collect sponsorship as you go. Whether it is half a mile or 100 miles, you pick how far you want to go and do it your way. Walk, wheel, arm cycle, swim, scoot, run, row… it’s completely up to you. Every challenge taken helps ensure we can be there for everyone affected by MS. Today, tomorrow and every day after.

If you’re after some extra motivation to sign up, in a recent survey, we asked some of our 2019 Miles for MS participants what they gained from taking part in the event. Here are some of the results.

Why take part

It can kick-start your fitness regime

Research shows that regular, moderate exercise is an important part of maintaining good health and wellbeing for people with MS, but sometimes getting started with exercise can feel daunting. 91% of those who took part in our survey said they “intend to exercise more as a result of taking part in Miles for MS”.

It has physical benefits

According to the survey, the top three physical benefits people found from taking part in Miles for MS were increased energy levels, improved sleep quality and an increase in stamina.

It boosts your mood

Exercising is known to release positive endorphins and, according to the survey, those who took part in Miles for MS felt happier, more confident and found that their focus and concentration improved too.

You are raising money for a cause that’s important to you

78% of those who completed the survey said they found receiving sponsorship to complete the challenge “extremely motivating”.*

This year, we’d like even more people to reap the rewards of taking part in Miles for MS. We’d particularly like to encourage those people with MS who have problems with mobility to sign up. If you would like to take part and would like to find out accessible ways you could get involved in this event, please do get in touch at fundraising@mstrust.org.uk.

*Survey results based on 60 responses from the 151 participants that took part in the 2019 Miles for MS event.
