MS Trust and London Northwest University Healthcare NHS Trust are pleased to announce that they have appointed a new specialist MS nurse, Jero Esplanada. This role will be vital in enhancing support for people living with multiple sclerosis across the region. This role was created as part of the MS Trust Specialist Nurse Programme, which continues to ensure that everyone with MS in the UK has access to a specialist MS health professional.

Previous experience

Jero offers nearly a decade of specialist neurology experience, having begun his UK nursing career in 2017 after relocating from the Philippines. He began his work at National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in neurorehabilitation and the hyper-acute stroke unit, where he was able to develop a strong foundation in managing complex neurological presentations and long-term patient care.

A clear testament of Jero’s passion for advancing clinical knowledge led him to research neurology, focussing on Alzheimer’s disease studies at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery. During this time, he was featured on the BBC while administering a newly introduced Alzheimer’s medication. A testament on the significance of his work within the research community. Jero then went on to join the Cleveland Clinic London as a charge nurse, where he supported extremely complex inpatients and managed long-term cases.

Making a difference

In Jero’s new role within the MS service, Jero will be instrumental in establishing and running dedicated MS clinics for patients across North West London. Jero has a clear enthusiasm for his new role but is also realistic about the challenges ahead. Whilst he is aware that this will be an adjustment when transitioning to new systems and processes, he is looking forward to the opportunity to offer a patient-centred approach within his own practice.

I would like as much as possible to have a close relationship with them to be able to monitor them properly.

Jero offers a clear understanding of the need to be responsive to the individual needs of patients to make them feel supported and confident in the care they are receiving. Evidently, Jero will offer a balance within his new role of both professional expertise and human connection, ensuring that his patients feel their needs are truly understood.

Ongoing support

Looking to the future, Jero will be working closely with MS Consultant Neurologist Dr. Scalfari on a long-term, ambitious vision to develop a wellness centre for people with MS. The centre would seek to offer holistic support which can be used alongside clinical services, to allow people with MS to live well.

Jero also hopes to get involved with research again, where he can then present studies at events such as, MS Trust Conference to raise the profile of MS research. Within his research, Jero is keen to ensure that people remain  MS are at the heart of his work and will ensure to keep them involved to improve their lives.

Jero is already making a strong impression and his combination of clinical expertise, research interest, and compassionate approach will be of real value to people with MS living across North West London.
