Cialis (tadalafil)

Other name: Tadalafil

Cialis (pronounced See-Ah-Liss) is a prescription medicine for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, a symptom that can affect men with multiple sclerosis (MS).

How do I take Cialis?

Cialis is taken at least half an hour before sexual activity, though is most effective about two hours after it is taken. If you anticipate needing treatment more than once a week, it can be prescribed a smaller daily dose. This continuous dose must be regularly reviewed.

Tadalafil lasts longer than the other drugs. Some people may still experience effects up to 36 hours after use. This can allow greater scope for spontaneity in lovemaking than some of the other erectile dysfunction drugs.

Unlike Viagra (sidenafil) and Levitra (vardenafil), the effects of tadalafil are not delayed if taken with food.

What side effects could I get with Cialis?

Common side effects include headaches, flushing, upset stomach, visual disorders, nasal congestion and dizziness.

You should not take Cialis if:

  • you are receiving treatment with drugs containing nitrates, such as those used to treat angina, or using recreational drugs such as poppers
  • you have serious heart disease
  • you have low blood pressure or uncontrolled high blood pressure

If you have problems with liver or kidney function, talk to your doctor before starting treatment with Cialis.

How does Cialis work?

Cialis works by delaying the action of enzymes called PDE5 (phosphodiesterase type 5), which regulate blood flow in the penis. Altering levels of this enzyme means that normal sexual stimulation leads to better erections.
