MS Clinical Nurse Specialist, Gail Shore, has decided to take on the Virgin Money London Marathon in 2020 to raise money for the MS Trust. Despite being apprehensive (she has not run more than 10k), she explains why she is taking on this iconic event to help the MS Trust to continue to support other MS health professionals and those living with MS today.
"I wasn’t one of these people who knew from the age of three what they wanted to do. Then, in my early twenties, a family member became unwell and it gave me the drive to pursue a nursing career.
Working in MS can be complex. I knew early on, that I would need to know everything. Myself and colleagues have made lots of service improvements which is rewarding. Knowing we have made changes that has a direct impact on patients is great!
I wanted to take part in the London Marathon because I like a challenge and I wanted to give something back to the MS Trust. They have been so supportive to me and my patients.
I have attended the MS Trust conference each year since I started in post, which has been invaluable to my role; very informative, educational and great for networking and getting new ideas. As well as other educational days, I regularly use the MS Trust website, receive email updates and use their patient support information.
My motivation is to not let anyone down!
That includes my patients, family, friends and definitely myself. I am very competitive and once I have something in my mind, I have to do it. I also struggle with my own weight and need to show my patients that I practice what I preach."
